Whistler Blackcomb is opening for the 2016/2017 winter season in just a few days and the excitement is overwhelming. If you are a parent with children, not only are you required to get yourself ready for the big day but your little ones as well. Improper planning can lead to a shortened day on the hill or even discourage your child from taking part in the sport, making it better to be more prepared rather than less. To have the most fun possible skiing with your kids and a great start to the season for everyone, follow these tips!
DAYS BEFORE
Make sure everything fits
There is nothing like waking up on opening day and finding out that your child has outgrown his or her gear from the previous year. What’s even worse, is trying to squeeze anything on- This tactic is sure to make your time on the mountain short lived. Turn putting on your child’s gear into a game and identify what might need to be replaced- especially ski boots and outerwear!
Get Passes
Take the kids for a stroll into the village and sort out your passes a few days before hand. This will be a huge time saver on opening day and it helps keep the excitement level high by eliminating waiting in line first thing in the morning.
NIGHT BEFORE
Lay out everything the night
Getting everyone in your family dressed might be a challenging pursuit, especially when it comes time to put on those rigid ski boots. Lay out all of your child’s as well as your own gear the night before to allow for a few extra minutes and prevent forgetting a necessary piece of clothing. To simplify even further, here is a checklist:
- Helmet and Goggles
- Neck Warmer
- Base Layer
- Socks
- Jacket, snow pants and/or snowsuit
- Gloves
- Ski pass
Proper Sleep
As a parent, you are probably aware that sleep can prevent unwanted tears. Ensure everyone gets a proper night sleep. The less tired everyone is, the more enjoyable the day will be.
DAY OF
Have Breakfast
Breakfast is a great way to start every morning but it’s a necessity for a ski day! A full belly will provide the energy needed to fuel the day’s activities and delay taking a break till the family has had the first few runs of the season under their belt.
Take Breaks
Taking numerous micro-breaks throughout the day not only provides a chance for your little one to rest, it can help your child associate skiing with enjoyment and family fun!
Make it Fun
Play games, sing songs and have snowball fights. This will show your child that being on the ski hill is about more than just skiing and will enhance their day overall.
The atmosphere of opening day is full of excitement! Simplify and make the experience more enjoyable for the whole family with these helpful tips.
