For many, the Victoria Day long weekend marks the official start of summer. Warm weather and consistent sunny days invade Whistler and there is no shortage of activities to do, especially for your kids! Lakes, forests and the village all provide a range of things to do in Whistler for all ages and many of them can be free or of little cost. Here is our top five free summer activities for kids in Whistler:
Float the river of Golden Dreams
Grab an Explorer 500 boat from the local hardware store or a canoe if you have access to one and be prepared to create a national geographic adventure of your own. The River of Golden Dreams starts in Alta Lake and travels to Green Lake so leave approximately 2-3 hours, depending on paddle speed. Wildlife ranging from birds to bugs to fish and if your lucky, maybe a bear or two can be seen on your journey. Don’t forget to arrange a pick up!
Visit the Library
Take in music, reading, crafts or language all at the Whistler Public Library. Community events are always being ran here and cater to all ages. There is even a summer reading club so your child can brush up on their reading skills over the break. The Library’s website is a good place to start to find out current events and program details.
Hike
No matter what age your kids are, there is variety of hikes in Whistler that can be fun! From easy and short to a bit more challenging, Whistler has something for everyone. Start in the Lost Lake trails and move up to more adventurous hikes such as Rainbow Falls or Cheakamus Lake. Visit the Water Park at MeadowPark
Located right behind the sports centre, you can walk or bike here and make a day out of it. The water park is a great place to let the kids run free while you catch up with friends or run around with them if your brave enough to confront the cold water. Take a break from the water and enjoy the many other amenities in the park area such as a baseball diamond, basketball and tennis courts.
Travel to North Arm Farm
Head to North Arm Farm in Pemberton. Farm animals, a giant swing set and fruit picking will keep your kids and you busy for a whole afternoon. You can shop their farm fresh produce and purchase buckets to pick berries, so leave with dinner and dessert!
