Many people elect to hibernate at the first signs of winter — but here in Whistler, winter tends to have the opposite effect.
Maybe it’s the majestic monoliths surrounding us from every angle. Maybe it’s the peaceful vibe in town after a fresh snowfall. Maybe it’s the twinkling lights along the Village Stroll.
Whatever it is, winter in Whistler is a time to gather your favourite people and have some serious fun outdoors.
So when you see the snowflakes start to flutter down from the sky, you know what to do: grab your family, go outside, and celebrate this wonderful season. Here are a few family-friendly winter activities for a little inspiration.
Family Ski Day
Skiing and Whistler go hand-in-hand – but how often do you really spend a day together on the slopes as a whole family? With conflicting work schedules, ski lessons, and other commitments, skiing tends to get a little fragmented – so go out of your way to change that for a special day on the hill.
Head to the mountain and spend a morning or an afternoon together on Whistler Blackcomb. Take turns letting each family member choose which run to tackle. Cherish funny moments on the chairlift, and create some fantastic family memories.
Snow Tubing
Snow tubing is an awesome family activity because it’s exhilarating without being overly extreme, it requires no real skill or experience, and everyone over the age of three is able to participate. Hit up the Coca Cola tube park for some excitement and adventure – it’s a great way to spend some time playing in the snow.
Family Après
Have you heard of Whistler Presents? It’s a series of entertaining events and activities taking place throughout Whistler – and best of all, it’s free! One such event is Family Après, which takes place from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM on select days by the Olympic Plaza in Whistler Village.
What is Family Après? Well, the beauty is that the agenda changes each week. Expect musical performances, crafts, snacks, exhibits, and a few unexpected surprises along the way.
Family Après kicks off in December, so keep checking the website for exact dates.
Hit the Valley Trail
Winding through Whistler from tip to tip, you don’t have to venture far to appreciate Whistler’s Valley Trail. Leash up your dog, bundle up your family members, and head outside for a leisurely stroll along the Valley Trail. A few sections worth checking out: Nicklaus North Golf Course to the Whistler High School (along Green Lake) and Creekside (from Nita Lake) heading along Alta Lake. Spending time outdoors together as a family doesn’t have to complicated in order to be fun.
Grab a Hot Chocolate
Treat your family to a classic wintery treat with a warm mug of hot chocolate. You can’t go wrong with the decadent hot chocolate at Portobello’s at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler – the Belgian hot chocolate is to die for, and the holiday décor is part of the magic. Keep your eyes peeled for the giant gingerbread house – just follow your nose and you’ll have no trouble finding it.
